Womandla Foundation is a non-profit company which seeks to bridge the gender gap by upskilling and equipping African women and girls so they can further their own economic development and make bigger contributions to society. Womandla collaborates with other organizations to promote social innovation, public education, community enrichment and transformation.
One of Womandla's approaches towards economic empowerment is to encourage more women and young girls in South Africa to enter entrepreneurship as an alternative career path and driver of economic activity.
In addition, we acknowledge the importance and role of entrepreneurship in a volatile job market, therefore it is key to develop interventions that influence women and young girls to actively participate and contribute towards the economy so as to bridge the existing poverty and unemployment gap.
We believe that every young woman needs a hand to hold through their educational journey in order to realize their full potential. Representation matters, when a young woman sees an example of what she envisions, it starts to become attainable
The cornerstone of mentorship is in providing constant, continued support while encouraging and motivating by example. We identify young women in their secondary level of education and enrolling them into a tailored journey of mentoring and personal development.
Through this tailored journey we hope to achieve the following:
STEAM is one of the four main pillars on which Womandla stands. STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) recognises the global movement that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is not mutually exclusive to Arts. The establishment of the STEAM Committee came as a result of the need to expose and encourage young girls and women to not fear these previously male-dominated careers but to instead understand and be excited about the prospects of entering these exciting fields.
Boosting STEAM literacy and alerting students to various career paths in STEM careers is relevant because of the stigma that these industries are not within reach, female learners who do not come from privileged backgrounds being worse off. Therefore, we have an important role to debunk that myth. Furthermore, with the 4th industrial revolution underway, STEM careers are undoubtedly taking the world by storm.
